America's traditional sources of power are eroding amid the emergence of new technologies and the growing military threat posed by rivals such as China. How the US military fights, and the systems and weapons that it fights with, have been uncontested. A book worth binging over...it details the struggle that the military industrial complex is in, and how we are getting farther behind in the global competition against China and Russia. If we manage to avoid the tragic trajectory we’re on, the ideas in this book will be a big part of our success.

I really liked the last half of this book, but I was about to turn it off half way through. There are a lot of people in the defense space right now who can talk at 30,000 foot levels about these technologies, but the moment it starts getting down into the details, that's where folks check out or they defer to others.

The Kill Chain: How Emerging Technologies Threaten America's Military Dominance by Christian Brose is a book I deeply appreciate, but find myself reluctant to fully agree with.

It is difficult to overstate the tragic irony of this moment: at times intentionally, at times unintentionally, Washington has spent two decades erecting impenetrable walls between itself and Silicon Valley, walls that had the effect of preserving the status quo at all costs, only to come to the belated conclusion that the future effectiveness of the US military depended on many of those disruptive technologies that Silicon Valley was so instrumental in building but was now less eager than ever to provide to the government. How the US military fights, and the systems and weapons that it fights with, have been uncontested. For most of the past decade, the author of ".
The Kill Chain is compelling, scary, and must-reading for our political leaders and all intelligent voters.

Jonathan Wong is an associate policy researcher at the non-profit, non-partisan RAND Corporation and a non-resident fellow at Marine Corps University's Krulak Center for Innovation and Creativity. Prose - the former Senate Armed Service Committee Staff Director for the late Senator McCain and current Head of Strategy at Anduril Industries and Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace - outlines a compelling vision of future war, its inherent risks, what got us here, and what will get us there. "We don't need senior defense leaders and members of Congress to be data scientists and software engineers, but we do need them to have a level of knowledge about artificial intelligence, machine learning and networking technologies.".

The author did spend quite a bit of time complaining on how defense leaders make decisions and the bureaucracy involved. Brose pulls no punches, and pours every modicum of insight he gleaned from years working for the late John McCain as an advisor and.

The US spent $700 billion a year on its military, yet as it is the case in business, it's not just how much money you spend, it's how you spend that much as well. The Kill Chain is a convincing wakeup call that the military-congressional-industrial complex is so broken that the very survival of America as Americans know it is at risk unless mammoth changes are made in how the Department of Defense defines, identifies, procures and deploys emerging technology, a problem that is as much about organizational change as it is about technological change. The Kill Chain has a thesis: we are unprepared to fight the next war, with military budget allocations and the defense industry anchored to the past, and unwilling to engage in the type of experimentation and innovation necessary to generate …

It’s the rising superpower of China, and probably Russia, that the U.S. will be fighting in the future.

He highlights how politicians are focused on traditional platforms rather than future technologies such as AI and machine learning.
